“Where do you call home?” a friend asked me.
Having grown up in Indiana, I hesitated. I raised my children here in New England and established my career here, and I have considered this my home for almost 40 years. Yet, I hesitated because a part of me always feel that I have “come home" when I travel to Indiana and see the waving wheat fields, rows upon rows of corn, wide horizons where you can see the sky for miles, and of course, the family homestead.
Deep inside of all of us is a longing for home. There is something deeply meaningful about “coming home." “Something in us always needs to be called home. We need to see what or who we lack inside.” (Joyce Rupp, in May I Have This Dance?)
Where do you call home? If your heart is lonely and longing for something more, maybe it’s time to think of home in a different way, such as a spiritual home with God. As St. Augustine once said, “Our hearts are restless, O God, until they find rest in thee.” Is your heart restless, longing for something more to life? Maybe you need to turn to God. One of my favorite old hymns is by Will L. Thompson:
Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me;
See, on the portals he’s waiting and watching, watching for you and for me.
Come home, come home; you who are weary, come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, calling, O sinner, come home!”
If you have no church home, if you have no relationship with God, why not find your spiritual home with us? The people here in the church can be your family, and possibly meet your needs in ways that your relatives cannot. Put God in your life—not only in and through the church, but also at home, at work, and in your leisure time. You just might discover that your heart is finally “home.”
